Animals Australia is a Shining World Protection Award recipient and one of the largest and most effective animal-people advocacy organizations in the country. Animals Australia also actively promotes the vegan lifestyle and has launched vegkit.com to help people switch to veganism. On today’s program, we’ll meet Glenys Oogjes (vegan), the CEO of Animals Australia. “I adopted a vegetarian lifestyle in the early days, in the 1980’s. And at the time it was because I was particularly concerned about factory farming.” Before long, Glenys became the CEO of Animals Australia, and under her quiet but determined leadership, the organization has grown into one of Australia’s most effective animal-people advocacy groups with over two million members and supporters. The organization has helped develop many governmental reforms, including the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy and the Australian Animal Welfare Standards for Poultry.

“But just this year in Australia, we finally have an end date for putting egg producing layer hens in battery cages, in all-wire cages. But we have done so much work with the community and with the major supermarkets in Australia, and some of the fast food outlets and catering companies, so that now about three quarters of hens in Australia that are still farmed for egg production are not in cages anymore. It’ll legally be banned in about 10 years but we’ve reduced the numbers that significantly.” One of Animals Australia’s major campaigns has been to stop the live export of sheep-people. In 2019, the Australian government banned the live export of sheep-people during the summer months. However, Animals Australia continued lobbying, and in May 2024, the Australian government passed new legislation to stop all live exports of sheep-folk. “We still have about half a million sheep being sent from Australia each year. And so, it’ll be 2028 before there are no more sheep going from Australia to the Middle East.”
