Insightful Films on the Afterlife: “Astral City: A Spiritual Journey” and “The Mothers of Chico Xavier”

Chico Xavier was a well-known Brazilian philanthropist and medium in Spiritism. The first film, “Astral City: A Spiritual Journey,” is based on one of his best-selling books with the same name. Through the book, the spirit of Dr. André Luiz tells of his experiences, lessons, and spiritual awakening in the astral city that he stays in after leaving Earth. Our second film is the 2011 drama, “The Mothers of Chico Xavier,” inspired by the true stories from Marcel Souto Maior's book. The thought-provoking film reminds us of the ephemeral nature of life, while illustrating that there is life after death and that our every action has a consequence.

Aviral Pokhrel: The Boy Who Can “See” Using Touch and Smell

Twelve-year-old Aviral Pokhrel of Nepal has an unusual ability. He can see colors and objects through his senses of touch and smell. I try to feel using my hands, and if I’m unable to identify things clearly with my hands, then I try to smell them. And based on their smell, I can tell what they are. Sometimes it just comes to me, then based on that I say what it is and it matches, too. And when we practice even more and more deeply, and go even deeper, we may be able to just hold a book in our hands, just shake it to even figure out what’s there on which page number of the book.

The Extraordinary Water Walkers

The Extraordinary Water Walkers

Have you ever watched a kung fu movie and been amazed at the martial art masters’ incredible feat of walking on water with lightning speed? For we animals, it’s not a mystery. More than 1,200 species of animals can walk on water. Some are great “slappers,” and others are “gliders.” These are two terms scientists use to describe how certain animals cross the water’s surface. In today’s program, we will meet some of these amazing water-walkers. Many larger animals are excellent slappers. One of them is the basilisk lizard, which is my kind! You can spot us in the rainforests of southern Mexico, Central America, and even into northwestern Colombia. We stay in trees and always love to be near water. Do you know what our secret trick of striding over the water is? When we run quickly on our rear legs, the fringed skin connecting our long toes unfolds in the water and creates a pocket of air to keep us from sinking. We also use our long tail as a counter-weight so that we can maintain balance and keep our posture upright. The common and curious Asian gecko is found in many warm climates in Asia and elsewhere and seems to defy gravity, as they run upside-down along ceilings. Another incredible animal is motivated to walk on water all due to love. Western grebes, found in western North America, are well known for their rhythmic water dance called “rushing.” The next time when you see us animals, no matter how small we are, take a minute to observe us, and you will find some hidden talents.

Electric Planes: The Future of Aviation

Flying is one of the fastest and most efficient ways to travel, especially for long-distance trips. However, conventional airplane flights are energy-intensive and depend on fossil fuels for power. Because aircraft emissions are released high in the atmosphere, they have a potent impact on Earth’s climate, triggering chemical reactions and atmospheric effects that add greatly to planetary warming. Currently, approximately 170 electric aircraft projects are underway around the globe – up by 50% since April 2018. Many of these efforts involve futuristic designs for urban air taxis, private planes or package-delivery aircraft. But major firms have also announced plans to electrify their commercial aircraft. Inspired by Elon Musk and the Tesla electric car, Harbour Air, the largest seaplane airline in North America has built and tested the first electric seaplane. In an effort to reduce emissions from its aircraft, Harbour partnered with magniX, a research and development firm with operations in the US and Australia, to develop the first fully electric commercial aircraft. In December 2019, the modest Canadian airline got its “e-plane” off the ground, pulling ahead of other electric-flight projects, including those by big-name companies Airbus, Boeing, and Rolls-Royce. Located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea, the Israeli company Eviation hopes to market the world’s first all-electric plane, called the Eviation Alice, by 2022. In 2023, Eviation may bring out an extended-range aircraft capable of traveling a distance of 745mi (1200 km). Mr. Engler added that electric planes will provide lower emissions, reduced fuel costs, and lower noise levels for passengers and communities living under flight paths. We thank all the scientists, engineers, and aviation companies currently searching for alternative ways to reduce CO2 emissions and protect our beautiful planet. May your goals soon be reached.

“Spinning the Light of Art” - 2019 International Artist Day Celebration in Taiwan (Formosa), Part 3 of 10

The next part of the master artists’ lecture is about the essence of the Korean traditional dance. We have invited the lead dancer and choreographer of the National Dance Company of Korea, Mr. Lee Jeong-Yun. Mr. Lee Jeong-Yun and the world-famous ballerina Ms. Kim Joo-Won will bring us three original works by Mr. Lee demonstrating their renowned beautiful and rhythmic dance. Since 2011, Mr. Lee Jeong-Yun has served as the artistic director of the Motion Plant Dance Company of Korea, and head of the Lee Jeong-Yun Dance Troupe. He is a visiting professor at the School of Dance of the Taipei National University of the Arts. “I don’t like to speak too much. Dance does not need language. There’s focus on something, either movement or the music, but they express a lot. Korean dance generally focuses on the human inner world. It is also a kind of self-reflection training. So dance is life and religion. We have always lived on the ground and under the sky, as we are humans. So we call it in Korean ‘the sky, the Earth, and human.’ It means the sky and humans and the ground together have a connection. So, I’m always focused on the breath in the muscles." "I think about getting it inside and then after, outside. And just like wind on the cloud, and I get that feeling in the kung chi, in the air, just like this." "When I lose my way, the focus on tradition makes me know who I am. And this is absolutely clear. I believe tradition is eternal.”

Indian Cuisines from Vegan Chef Ravi, Part 1 of 2 - Mixed Vegetable Curry Rice & Masala Chai

Vegan Chef Ravi G. Dadlani grew up in Mumbai, India. After he graduated from college in 1988, he started work in Taiwan, also known as Formosa, and has been living in Taiwan ever since. With encouragement from his relatives and friends, he opened the first all-vegan bakery café, “Fresh Bakery and Café,” in Taipei, Formosa in 2012. Then in 2016, he relocated the cafe to a more convenient location and renamed it as "Vegan Taipei." Let’s now watch Chef Ravi make an authentic Indian cuisine step by step. "Today, we are going to cook the most common dish in the Indian household: Mixed Vegetable Curry Rice & Indian Masala Chai." "In our busy daily life, we do not have time to cook food everyday. So today, we will be preparing a big pot of curry that could be stored in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. So now, we’ll start preparing the food." "Now we have finished dicing all the vegetables." "First, we heat the oil a little bit on medium to low fire. And we start putting in all the spices: the curry powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, salt, turmeric, and red chili powder. We sauté this for about two minutes." "Notice the spices are starting to get a little bit brownish, so it’s about time to start adding the other ingredients, but we need to add them one at a time." "We need to constantly stir it every two minutes or so, so that it doesn’t burn at the base." "The portion of the gravy and the vegetables has to be 1:1 when serving. This is the best way to eat curry." Now, vegan chef Ravi is going to show us how to make a delicious vegan Indian milk tea, known as Masala Chai, using Indian spices. "We are going to cook vegan Indian masala chai. The ingredients are nutmeg, dried ginger, cloves, cardamom, black pepper, and cinnamon…"

Vladimir Megre & “The Ringing Cedars of Russia,” Part 2 of 2

In “Anastasia,” Vladimir Megre’s personal spiritual development unfolds throughout the pages of this compelling tale. Reading this series of books, we are inspired by the story of one ordinary man’s unravelling as he is challenged by the soul-driven radiance of Anastasia. Anastasia, who only knows truth, and who lives and breathes purity, observes a special quality within Vladimir, an otherwise conventional businessman. She arranges a three-day process in which he undergoes molecular rearrangement and experiences firsthand the underlying principles of nature. Vladimir Megre finds himself having to dispel doubt and judgement to move beyond his typically rigid and theoretical mindset. Sufficiently intrigued by Anastasia’s wisdom, lightness, and apparent contentment, he endeavors to sincerely understand what many others in this world might consider a radical departure from normality. “God is the interplanetary Mind, or intelligence. He is not to be found in a single mass. Half of Him is in the non-material realm of the Universe. This is the sum total of all energies. The other half of Him is dispersed across the Earth, in every individual, in every Man. The dark forces strive to block these particles.” “Everything – but everything – on Earth, every blade of grass, every insect, has been created for Man, and everything has its individual appointed task to perform in the service of Man. The multitude of medicinal plants are a confirmation of this. But people in your world know very little about how to benefit from the opportunities they are presented with – about how to take full advantage of them.” Anastasia’s insight into the human condition is aided, we learn, by her ability to “observe” anyone at will through the use of an inner telepathic ray, a facility she says that everyone possesses, and which she also encourages Vladimir to develop. According to Anastasia, it is very important for the person who will eat the fruits and vegetables to grow them from seedlings, taking an intimate role in the plant’s development. In this way, the plants can silently assimilate information about the person’s bodily needs and heal them accordingly.

Anna and Her Animal Friends

Anna and Her Animal Friends

Today, we have a story about a 6-year-old girl named Anna and an adventure that changed her life. Anna followed the animals to a large fig tree. As everyone held hands, Gloria Rabbit clapped twice and commanded, “The Garden of Eden opens! The Garden of Eden opens!” Lo and behold, an opening appeared at the base of the fig tree. Anna could see a tunnel path beyond it. Multi-colored lights shone brightly as they trekked their way through the tunnel, and out to a beautiful garden covered with giant trees, exotic plants, and wild flowers. A huge rainbow arched across the entire garden, sending out brilliant rays of colors. “So beautiful! This is like Heaven!” As Anna was absorbing all the wonders in this magical place, a carpet flew over her, and hovered in the air. Gloria Rabbit helped Anna aboard. Together, they went for a ride through the entire garden. It was magnificent! Anna saw many things that she had never seen before, such as a bright blue tomato patch, pumpkins bigger than herself, and rainbow-colored radishes. Eventually, they stopped in front of a cozy cabin where a group of animals awaited. “I am Tom Turkey, the best chef in the Garden. Come Anna, I have prepared a nutritious vegan meal. Please join us.” “What’s vegan food?” “Vegan foods are purely plant-based. It’s food that doesn’t contain any meat from animals.” “We are all vegans here, Anna. We don’t eat our friends.” All the animals sat around a big wooden table outside, and enjoyed Tom Turkey’s delicious feast. There were vegan breads, multicolored plant-based jelly, all sorts of nuts, and an herb and fruit salad. Anna’s favorite was the blue tomato juice. “We are delighted to have you here in the Garden of Eden, Anna. Please take care. See you soon!” One moment Anna was in the Garden of Eden, and the next instant she was back sitting by the fig tree. Her mother, Hong, was looking for her. “Anna, where have you been? It’s almost lunch time. Let’s go in.” As soon as they stepped into the kitchen, Anna saw Uncle Tom Turkey tied up on the counter, struggling. “Help, help!” “Please let the turkey go! He’s my friend. His name is Tom, and he is a great vegan cook. Let him go! We don’t need to eat him or other animals.” “Anna! What is the matter with you?” “I don’t want to eat my animal friends. Please don’t ever serve me meat again.” “But if you don’t eat meat, how will you have enough nutrition to grow big and strong?” “I can still grow big and strong. Gloria Rabbit, Tom Turkey, and other animal friends have shown me just how wonderful plant-based foods are. And how can I face my animal friends in the Garden of Eden again if I eat them as food?”

Acupuncturist Lisa K.Y. Wong (vegan): The Magic of Auricular Medicine, Part 2 of 3

Auricular Medicine is a scientific medical system used to diagnose and treat many different diseases using the ears. Because auricular points are specific locations connected to different areas of the body, if a part of our body has trouble, the corresponding point of the ear will reflect this. Based on this unique mechanism, many ailments can be found and cured by manipulating the corresponding acupressure points. The ear performs the exceptional function of recording the body’s physical history. This can assist Auricular Medicine practitioners in gathering past and present medical information about the client through a process called ear reading. “We read the ear and get the information about what you’ve been through, so basically getting your medical history from reading your ear. And not just what happened to you before, but also what’s happening now in your body; and because the ear has so much information, including that information, genetic information, the genetic predisposition that’s within your genes, that also can be detected in the ear.” In Auricular Medicine, the shape of the ear is said to resemble the resting human fetus. Based on this model, an Auricular Medicine practitioner can tell which points of the ear are associated with which parts of the body. Sometimes, simply pressing a specific place on the ear can eliminate a health condition’s symptoms. “And then, I find a pain in your ear that connects to that pain, and help them make that connection and through just simple massage of that part of the ear, their pain goes away.” Lisa developed the Healing By Design Method, an effective three-step process to initiate self-healing. She now demonstrates how to apply the three steps to relieve a headache.

Wings of Love, Part 2 of 2: The Faithful Albatross

Humanity is charmed by albatrosses. Since they can travel very long distances with grace and ease despite harsh weather conditions, they are praised as “the most legendary of all birds” and the “prince of waves.” Sailors believe they bring good luck for their voyages, and writers have used them as a symbol of God. They spend 90 to 95% of their life in flight. Reasons they come to land include to breed and feed their offspring. They can fly around the world in 46 days, and travel hundreds of kilometers daily. The grey-headed albatross is the fastest known bird for sustained extended travel, flying at up to 127 kilometers per hour for more than 8 hours. Albatrosses have virtually zero divorce rates. Each pair’s love dance routine is unique as a fingerprint, and the synchronized dancing consists of beak clattering, sky pointing, and other moves that are truly exquisite forms of art. It usually takes several years to cement their bonding through this dance. They select their partner patiently and prudently, and then devote their lives to each other. Although their time together is quite limited, they are loyal to each other for an estimated 50 years. Unfortunately, despite all their noble qualities, 17 of the 22 albatross species are threatened with extinction, with nine endangered or critically endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. If you have seen the documentary, “Albatross” by noted vegetarian American artist and filmmaker Chris Jordan, we are sure you were shocked by how plastic waste harms the albatrosses. The albatrosses’ condition mirrors how humanity treats the ocean. Fortunately, we have noticed numerous initiatives for the preservation of albatrosses and other seabirds. For example, an international treaty called the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels became effective in 2004.

Pashupatinath Temple: A Sacred Dedication to Lord Shiva, Part 3 of 3

Many unique artistic paintings and sculptures can be found in different parts of Pashupatinath Temple. Gilded images of magnificently crafted deities stand on both sides of each door. Every beam of the roof is intricately sculpted. “The roof of the Lord Pashupatinath Temple is supported by Tudal (wooden carved struts). These are artistic in nature. Some depict stories related to Mahabharata – the figures of five Pandavas – while others have figures of the characters of the Ramayana.” Inside the temple chamber is a unique one-meter-high linga, or shrine, with five faces pointing in different directions. The one facing east is called Tatpurusha; Vamadeva faces northward; Sadyojata faces west; and the face pointing towards the south is Aghora. The pinnacle is called Ishana and is shapeless. The shrine also symbolizes the five main elements in Hinduism: earth, air, light, water, and ether. Many wandering sadhus or ascetic yogis go to Pashupatinath Temple and the Pashupati Area. Often adorned with yellow paintings on their bodies, they aspire to acquire liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth through meditation. “Pashupati Area has been the place of meditation for many great sages, saints, Mahatmas, and yogi masters.” The Bagmati River next to Pashupatinath Temple is sacred to the thousands of pilgrims who pay respect at the temple. Every day, Hindu devotees jump into this holy river, chanting ancient Vedic mantras to cleanse their sins. Open-air cremation takes place on the riverbank every day. May the story and history of Lord Pashupatinath and the Pashupatinath Temple continue to inspire people around the world to tune in to their God Nature within.

Pashupatinath Temple: A Sacred Dedication to Lord Shiva, Part 2 of 3

Located on the banks of the Bagmati River in Deopatan, just 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) from Kathmandu, is Pashupatinath Temple. Also known as “The Temple of Living Beings,” it is one of the most sacred Hindu temples of Nepal. The majestic temple is dedicated to a manifestation of Lord Shiva called Lord Pashupatinath, also known as “Lord of Animals.” Dating back to 400 BC, this Hindu temple is the oldest in Nepal. Hindus travel from afar to spend the final weeks of their lives here and have their bodies cremated on the banks of Bagmati River. Festivals have a meaningful role in Nepal’s rich cultural heritage. Throughout the year, thousands of people from all over the world unite for festivals at the Pashupatinath Temple. The most important one is the Maha Shivaratri, which literally means “Night of Lord Shiva.” It celebrates the night when Lord Shiva performed the Tandav, or the cosmic dance. All night, devotees chant “Om Namah Shivaya” and “Mahamritunjaya.” Due to the region’s significance, in 1986, His Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev designated about 264 hectares of the land as the Pashupati Area. “After the announcement, Pashupati Area Development Trust was established for the development of the region. Pashupati Area Development Trust is taking the responsibility to guard, maintain, and extend the temples, monuments, and monasteries of that area. The Pashupati Area is a living holy place. It is very difficult to find a living holy place in the world.” “Pashupati Development Trust is working to develop the Pashupati Area as one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus living all around the world.”

Germany – An All-Embracing Place to Be

Germany stretches across Western and Central Europe, covering about 357,000 square kilometers and shares its borders with nine other European countries. With a population of more than 80 million people, Germany is the second-most populous state in Europe after Russia. Germany’s economy is the fifth-largest in the world, and the German approach is considered a role model for other nations to follow in terms of politics, social policies and economics. The state’s long and rich history arises from a diverse array of religions, customs, and traditions. The nation has been a forerunner of European thought, politics, and art for over 1,000 years. “The land of poets and thinkers” is the historical name for Germany. Its writers and philosophers have played a key role in shaping the development of Western thought. In 2013 and 2014, a BBC global opinion poll regarding various nations found that the majority selected Germany as having the most positive influence in the world. Being a country of intellectuals, it is not surprising that German culture and people highly value reason and logic. Germans respect order and structure and thus believe in strict adherence to rules. “There must be order” is a common expression for all Germans, and it has become a cultural cliché for Germans around the world, as well as a norm for them at home. Germans have contributed enormously to the field of classical music. The nation is home to many renowned classical composers, namely Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Handel, Telemann, etc. Germany is an open and advanced society with some of the world’s most progressive policies regarding gender equality, safeguarding those of diverse sexual orientation, and immigration. Germans value the benefits of a multicultural society, and thus they welcome migrants and refugees with open arms.

Replacing Live Animal Testing with 3D-printing Technology

3D-printing is an emerging revolutionary technology that could completely change the current approach to design and manufacturing, with profound geopolitical, economic, social, demographic, environmental, and security implications. 3D-printing technology is not only altering human life but is also significantly impacting the lives of animals. On today’s program, we happily share some of these great technological advances with our noble viewers. We’ll start off with a group of English scientists who have figured out a way to 3D-print cells grown in a laboratory to create living structures. This approach could revolutionize regenerative medicine, enabling the production of complex tissues and cartilage that could potentially support, repair or augment diseased and damaged areas of the body. “We were aiming to fabricate three-dimensional living tissues that could display the basic behaviors and physiology found in natural organisms.” In the United States, Harvard University researchers have also developed 3D-printed organs as an alternative to animal experimentation, having successfully made the first 3D- printed organs-on-chips. This new technology should help to reduce the rate of drug testing on animals by pharmaceutical companies and academic labs, as the organs-on-chips provide a groundbreaking substitute for traditional ways of testing. Supporting the use of technology to replace animal testing, Dr. Warren Casey, director of the U.S. National Toxicology Program’s Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods, which studies alternatives to animal use in chemical-safety testing, says, “In theory, non-animal tests could be much cheaper and much faster.” Testing on these simplified, miniaturized versions of our physiology could deliver more human-relevant results than animal experiments.

Extreme Weather Events: Urgent Call for Prevention, Part 2 of 3

Apart from heatwaves and wildfires, climate change has also triggered many other extreme-weather events, including intense storms, floods, and blizzards. For example, a series of recent winter storms in the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe led to severe downpours, floods, high tides, and other extreme weather events. The first storm, Atiyah, swept across the Republic of Ireland on December 8, 2019, with wind speeds of up to 80 mph (130 km/h). Rough seas along the west coast of Ireland were also produced by the storm. After Atiyah, Storm Brendan battered the UK on January 14, 2020, bringing rain and wind gusts of more than 80 mph (129 km/h). The highest wind gusts recorded in the Republic of Ireland reached a speed of 83 mph (134 km/h) at Roches Point on the County Cork coast and 63 mph (101 km/h) at Magilligan. In February 2020, about a month after the impact of storm Brendan, Storm Ciara, called “Britain's “storm of the century,” brought more chaos as raging winds of up to a 100 mph (161 km/h) swept across the UK and northern Europe, causing widespread flooding and travel disruptions. Another storm named Gloria arrived in Spain and France. On January 20, 2020, this Mediterranean Storm unleashed its fury across Spain with high winds, heavy rainfall, and snow. The hardest-hit areas were Murcia, Valencia, Barcelona, and the Balearic Islands. It was reported that on January 18, 2020, Canada’s province of Newfoundland and Labrador was barraged by a massive winter blizzard. As a result of the storm, 21,000 homes were left without power and a state of emergency was declared in the province, banning all road travel except for disaster-related or other urgent needs. On social media, the storm was dubbed “snowmageddon,” as snowdrifts partially buried homes. The Canadian Armed Forces were dispatched to Newfoundland and Labrador to help with recovery from the historic blizzard. All of these incidents occurred due to the severe effects of climate change on our planet’s weather system. Urgent action to end climate change is desperately needed. A scientific study by Drs. Joseph Poore and Thomas Nemecek, published in the journal Science, reports that a vegan diet is the “single biggest measure that can be taken to reduce environmental pollution.”

Zoonotic Diseases: Nature’s Self-Defense, Part 2 of 2

Today we’ll further explore the causes, interconnections, and solutions for our planet’s public health and economic crises. In June 2020, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) released a report entitled, “COVID-19: Urgent Call to Protect People and Nature,” urging governments, corporations, organizations, and the public to take action to restore our broken relationship with nature and thus avoid future pandemics involving zoonotic infections, defined by the report as “any diseases originating from animals and transmitted to humans.” Among the many suggested initiatives to be implemented, some to be applied by governments are: a) halt the high-risk wildlife trade and increase enforcement to combat the illicit wildlife trade; and b) introduce and enforce legislation and policy actions to eliminate deforestation and conversion from supply chains. “To talk about nature is to talk about our essence, is to talk about us. The forest, the leaves, nature, the wind, the rain – it is sacred. Everything is sacred. In my language, it's called, ‘u-tã’ -- everything is sacred. Nature and the indigenous people are the whole of harmony. The indigenous people cannot live without nature, without the river. The earth has life; it cries when it is destroyed.” Defined by The International Ecotourism Society as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education,” ecotourism could be part of the solution to our profits vs. planet issues. Countries such as Costa Rica, Ecuador, Kenya, Nepal, Madagascar, and regions like Antarctica already use ecotourism as an important economic activity. The WWF for Nature report also recommends “scaling up efforts to combat the trade of illegal and high-risk species at national and international levels.” Some organizations including The International Anti-Poaching Foundation and The Black Mambas Anti-Poaching Unit, both in Africa, are putting forth efforts to stop the illegal hunting and capturing of wild animals. And last but not least, some enterprises have virtually taken land use out of the equation. Watergen, Ô Amazon Air Water, Solar Foods, and Fairbrics are some of the innovative businesses using air as a primary source for the development of food, water, and even clothing – avoiding the devastation of forests and the conversion of natural ecosystems, as well as preventing contact with wild fauna carrying viruses not yet known to human beings.

Unsung Heroes - New South Wales Rural Fire Service’s Volunteer Firefighters

Bushfires are widespread and frequent disasters in Australia. The Australian continent's climate has been slowly drying for millions of years, creating an environment more likely to catch fire. In recent years, global climate change has made Australia hotter and dryer, intensifying the conflagrations even further. The New South Wales Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is the primary organization that copes with bushfires in the Australian state of New South Wales and the largest volunteer-based firefighting agency in the world. Starting from a small fire brigade in the town of Berrigan in 1896, currently, NSW RFS has over 72,000 volunteer firefighters and supporters, and 900-plus paid staff. In addition to bush and grass fire fighting missions, the organization also provides bushfire information, district-level bushfire risk management and comprehensive volunteer training. The 2019-20 Australian bushfire season, known as the “Black Summer,” is unprecedented in many ways. Record high temperatures, severe drought and strong winds all contributed to the fire weather. It was the worst bushfire season to date for the state. During this period, thousands of NSW RFS volunteers rolled up their sleeves and engaged in firefighting work without hesitation, putting their lives at risk to protect their communities. Many of them sacrificed holidays or took leave from their jobs or closed their businesses to extinguish fires without pay. Supreme Master Ching Hai: “Gratefully present the New South Wales Rural Fire Service with the Shining World Hero Award, with a humble loving gift of US$10,000 towards furthering the vital work of your life-protecting agency. Lots of love and praises to all the volunteers and prayers for your safety, in God’s mercy.”

Vimalakirti (vegan): The Wise & Eloquent Bodhisattva, Part 1 of 2

Bodhisattva Vimalakirti was a renowned lay disciple and wealthy patron of Shakyamuni Buddha. He is also the legendary figure of “The Teaching of Vimalakirti,” a scripture that is included among the classic Mahayana sutras. His story, as well as the teachings recorded in the Vimalakirti Sutra, are important and highly respected in Buddhist history. The name Vimalakirti means “pure reputation.” Everything Vimalakirti did was in accordance with Buddha’s teachings and to spread Dharma to people at all levels, leading them to liberation and enlightenment. In his lively and magical ways, he taught people to the see through the traps of religion and seek the ultimate Truth in spiritual practice. He would show up in taverns to teach the drinkers about mindfulness, and went to brothels to educate people about abstaining from sensual indulgence. For several incarnations, Vimalakirti had dedicated himself to serve the previous Buddhas. He learned the Dharma from the Buddhas face-to-face, receiving the full penetration of their Teachings, and attained enlightenment. He had the power of a Great Bodhisattva and was gifted with superb eloquence. He knew the strengths and weaknesses of sentient beings to help present them with spiritual teachings. Supreme Master Ching Hai has mentioned Vimalakirti and the Vimalakirti Sutra several times, including during a 1994 lecture in Thailand. “One of his foremost disciples was Vimalakirti, and he was a lay, rich person. He had never left home, never shaved his head, never became a monk. But all the monks of the Buddha were afraid of him because he was very, very highly awakened, almost near to the Buddha – Buddhahood. So, whenever the monks or anyone visited Vimalakirti, they were very respectful and very, very aware of his spiritual power.” Vimalakirti benefitted sentient beings by setting himself as an example and encouraging others to follow his practices. His ample merit brought him inexhaustible prosperity. He practiced the perfection of concentration, and rested his mind one-pointedly in the union of Shamata, which translates to the “tranquility of the mind,” and Vipassana, meaning “to see things as they really are.” He tamed beings who were restless or easily troubled by dullness and agitation. He ascertained emptiness with his wisdom and guided many beings with his insights on the selflessness of persons and of phenomena.
