How do we bring more joy into our lives? Here are a few useful suggestions: Take time to unwind. Take breaks. Laugh often. Be playful like a child. Practice gratitude. Focus on the positive and find a hobby. Humans are social animals so connect with your community and like-minded people. Volunteer.

Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn, founding executive director of the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, says, “The real meditation practice is how we live our lives from moment to moment to moment.” Dr. Kristen Gilliland gave a TEDx Talk in 2018 and conveyed the following: “If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present. Three sentences by the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu that are incredibly simple, yet so powerful.”

Giving thanks for the good in your life enhances well-being. In addition, reciting positive affirmations such as the following will help to anchor the positivity: “All I need is within me right now. I am grateful for everything I have in my life. I accept myself for who I am and create peace, power and confidence of mind and of heart.”

Performing volunteer service contributes to the welfare of others, creating positive and optimistic thoughts and feelings. Engaging in creative activities that allow for self-expression such as art, writing, music, or other forms of creativity lifts our heart and soul. We may even wonder, “What does life have to offer me? How can I reciprocate?”

Open your heart, share meaningful conversations with others, share your joys and sorrows, listen with full attention. You will love life and love people more. Your life will be warmer, more loving, and worthwhile.

Author Beau Taplin’s message: “So go, spend your time here with heart. Find what matters and manifest it while you can. Because while this universe we inhabit may be infinite and unfeeling, we are not, and that is our gift. The secret is knowing where to look. Sunsets are proof that endings can be beautiful too.”
