UN inaugurates vital assistance to Lebanon.
The United Nations and various partners launched a US$383 million Emergency Response Plan, supported by donor pledges, to offer vital help to 1.1 million residents in Lebanon. Recent economic and humanitarian crises have disrupted power and water supply, medical, and other critical services in the country. The plan includes 119 projects that will provide direct aid, including food and monetary assistance, access to medical and educational services, and nutritional monitoring with dietary supplements for 400,000 children and mothers. A fuel supply chain will be established to support ongoing humanitarian work, and health, water, and sanitation facilities. The United Nations is a laureate of the Shining World Leadership Award for Humanitarianism and two Shining World Leadership for Lives-Saving-Hero Awards. New study reveals the negative effects of air pollution in India.
A study by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago in the United States recently found that air pollution in India is causing 40% of the population to lose nine years of their life. Much of the problem is due to particulate matter, or PM2.5, which is emitted from vehicle exhausts, burning of crop residues, and heating homes. To remedy the situation, the government launched the National Clean Air Program in 2019, which is implementing a variety of measures to reduce pollution levels by 20 to 30% in 102 of India’s most affected cities by 2024. This could raise the nation’s overall life expectancy by about one-and-a-half years. Thank you, Energy Policy Institute and Indian government, for your efforts to improve India’s air quality. Australian startup creates world’s most efficient solar cell.
Sydney-based solar technology startup SunDrive, founded by Vince Allen and David Hu in 2015, recently created a solar panel that can convert 25.54% of sunlight into electricity. This is a meaningful improvement of about 0.3% compared to the prior record. Furthermore, silver has been replaced with copper, which is much more abundant and 100 times less expensive. It requires lower manufacturing temperatures and thus is less energy-intensive. The company hopes to have panels ready for sale by the first half of 2023, as they begin the process of testing and setting up production. Urban gardens project produces organic vegetables for food bank in Denver, Colorado, United States.
Grow Local Colorado, an urban non-profit food garden, donates the produce that volunteers grow to the Community Ministries of Southwest Denver, which operates a food bank for vulnerable families and individuals. Founded by Barbara Masoner in 2009, and co-directed by Linda Kiker, Grow Local Colorado has 17 urban garden sites producing freshly grown organic vegetables with over 400 volunteers who graciously donate their time to this worthy project. Over the past eleven years, the initiative has provided more than 11,340 kilograms of just-harvested local produce to more than a dozen organizations serving those with limited access to healthy food. Spanish plant-based food company launches new vegan pork products in former bullfighting ring.
Barcelona-based alternative meat startup Heura recently introduced its new vegan sausage and chorizo products at La Monumental, the last active commercial bullfighting arena in Catalonia, Spain. No bullfights have been held here since 2011 and the colosseum has been used for concerts and sporting events. The company’s new meat-free pork products are gluten-free, replicate traditional tastes, and provide improved nutritional values compared to their animal-people-based counterpart. In addition, up to 77% fewer CO2 emissions are emitted in their production. Heura co-founders Bernat Añaños and Marc Coloma also launched a video campaign and sent letters to government leaders stressing the urgency of switching to a plant-based diet to mitigate the climate crisis. Scuba diver from United States sees his shark-person friend after a year of absence.
Jim Abernethy recently joyously reunited with Emma, a person from the shark kingdom that he has been friends with for 20 years, after not being in the water for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The besotted Mr. Abernethy described his friend Emma as being the most lovable, affectionate and warm-hearted shark-person, and their friendship as “extreme joy, heartwarming and almost tearful.” Emma loves being stroked by her trusted friend, who so far has also removed four fishing hooks from her mouth. Such a beautiful relationship, Jim Abernethy and lovely Emma. May you continue to appreciate each other’s loving company for many years to come. We pray people will realize the importance of protecting the oceans and their sensitive inhabitants by switching to the compassionate vegan diet, in Heaven’s infinite benevolence.
