British government provides life-saving food aid to Afghanistan.
The United Kingdom, via its Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, has contributed an additional £25 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). The funds will be used for urgent operations in Afghanistan to help over 650,000 people survive this coming difficult winter with food and nutrition support, especially for the most vulnerable and those living in rural areas. The WFP will distribute 16,000 metric tons of nutritionally balanced foodstuffs and US$9.3 million in cash to families having food needs where markets are operational. Since November 2021, the UK has contributed £184 million to WFP Afghanistan. The United Kingdom is a laureate of the Shining World Leadership for Caring Award, Shining World Wise Leadership Award, and Shining World Leadership Awards for Protection, Animal Protection and Kindness. Thank you, United Kingdom and WFP, for the much-needed collaboration to help the Afghan citizens in need. New study from United States highlights severity of contracting COVID-19 more than once.
The research published by Benjamin Bowe, Dr. Yan Xie, and Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, in the journal Nature Medicine, examined the US Department of Veterans Affairs data of approximately 5.8 million individuals. It included those not infected with the virus, those who had tested positive once, and people infected up to four times. Findings showed that repeated COVID-19 infections led to a three-times higher risk of hospitalization, doubled the chance of death, and increased the likelihood of experiencing lung, brain, and heart problems. The risk for all harmful effects goes up with each infection. Researchers encourage people to wear masks in public, regardless of vaccine status and previous COVID-19 sickness. Art therapists support refugee children in Australia.
A nonprofit program in Australia, called Healing through Expressive Arts and Learning (HEAL), has placed expressive (also known as art) therapists in five schools across the state of Queensland which have refugees attending. The initiative utilizes dance, drama, music, and art to help students who have suffered trauma, to express themselves and connect with their past as well as school representatives. At Wilsonton State School in Toowoomba, where almost ten percent of the youngsters consist of refugees, the program has been a success, with the students exhibiting increased confidence. Our appreciation, HEAL therapists, for helping the beautiful refugee children access their inner peace and resilience. Honda Japan invents hands-free motorized wheelchair.
Honda has created a new wheelchair that allows the individual to use their hands freely for other activities and can be steered like a hoverboard by leaning left or right. Called “UNI-ONE,” the chair lowers automatically when the person is seated, and is supported by four legs for stability. When the individual would like to move again, UNI-ONE rises to a higher position, allowing the user to communicate more naturally with others at eye level. With a posture sensor that tracks the normal movement of a walking person, UNI-ONE can determine the direction and speed that the user wants to travel. The chair can also be operated by the elderly and children for either work or leisure purposes. Because of its potential to help the physically challenged, UNI-ONE was awarded the Good Design Gold Award at the 2022 Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Awards. The winners of the Tusk Conservation Awards, honoring African conservation leaders, were recently announced at a gala event held at Hampton Court Palace in London, United Kingdom. The Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa was received by Achilles Brunnel Byaruhanga, the Executive Director at Nature Uganda, and Ian Craig, who has been responsible for forming 43 conservancies across 63,000 square kilometers in Kenya. Miguel Gonçalves from Mozambique, who led efforts to transform Maputo National Park into a flourishing landscape with a thriving wildlife population, earned the Tusk Award for Conservation in Africa. The Tusk Wildlife Ranger Award was given to Neddy Mulimo from Zambia, who has been instrumental in creating measures to tackle poaching. Each of the winners was also gifted £345,000 to continue their work in protecting the nature and animal-people of Africa. PETA Germany has joined with Italian vegan bag and accessories manufacturer Miomojo to launch a range of purses made from corn leather. The stylish bags are available in three colors, incorporate a removable handle, and have an eco-friendly lining fashioned out of recycled plastic bottles. Moreover, the non-GMO, food-grade corn leather is a cruelty-free, sustainable alternative to animal-person leather. Miomojo will also allocate 20 percent of their sales revenue to benefit PETA’s animal-people endeavors. The founder and Chief Executive Officer of Miomojo, Claudia Pievani, shared, “Miomojo bags save lives twice. First, because they leave the animals’ skin right where it belongs – on the animals. Second, because they support animals in need, giving back to PETA.” PETA, the world’s largest animal-welfare non-profit, is a Shining World Compassion Award recipient. Largest no-kill dog-person shelter opens in United States.
Big Dog Ranch Rescue Alabama has been set-up on a massive 100-acre site as “a regional rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption center for neglected and abused dog-people.” This rescue center is also “a companion facility for a similar shelter in Palm Beach County, Florida.” The new location has three renovated buildings housing more than 100 dog-people, and a medically staffed provisional veterinary clinic. The organization has helped more than 53,000 dog-persons since 2008, and in the new facility, it will be able to accommodate 5000 dog-people a year. Lauree Simmons, Big Dog Ranch Rescue Founder and CEO, said, “The opening of a second Big Dog Ranch Rescue location is something I’ve prayed for over the years.” Big Dog Ranch Rescue is a Shining World Compassion Award recipient and in May 2020, our Beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan) humbly offered them US$15,000 as a token of loving support.
