The Japanese sword, also known as “katana,” has a long history in Japanese culture. The non-violent sword sport of Kendo has evolved out of this history and is mean to purify the human character through the ethics and principles of katana. Starting in the 18th century, Japanese sword techniques, known as “kenjutsu,” gradually evolved into a more spiritual practice influenced by Zen Buddhism. We are exploring the Japanese martial art of Kendo today, and are honored to be interviewing 7th Dan Kendo Master Ms. Ryuko Saoyama of Japan.
