Nature's Orchestra in Summer – Cicadas and Other Insect Musicians

There are more than 1300 species of cicada that have been documented, plus many species that remain undocumented. Cicadas can be found all around the world in temperate to tropical climates. As the nighttime ground temperature rises in early summer, cicadas begin emerging for their fifth and final molt, which occurs above ground. The music that fills the air a few days cicadas emerge from underground comes from males. Each species makes a unique sound so that a female can easily recognize their own kind.
