We’re going to check out some low-maintenance vegetables that you probably see on your plate, like beets, onions, spring onions, garlic, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. Beets, or beetroot, are super easy to grow. One of the great things about beets is that they can sprout in cooler temperatures, as low as 10° Celsius. Ms. Kia Jade shares tips for beginner gardeners on growing beets on her TikTok account, “Thirdly, consider companion planting. Beetroots love being planted near onions, lettuce and other leafy greens.”

Gardening expert Joe Clark from JoesGarden offers valuable tips on planting green onions. “Spring onions are such a fun crop as they are super easy to grow and have so many uses. Bunch up your cuttings together and pop them in the container. Then after a few days, they will start to regrow.”

Garlic doesn’t need much attention, but it grows pretty slowly. Let’s check out what Mohit Kumar Singh Rajput, an Indian gardener, has to say on the topic. “Place them with the flat end facing down. Bury the bulbs so they are covered with one inch (2.5 centimeters) of soil mix.”

American TikTok gardener Brian Brigantti has some cool tips for growing potatoes in pots to save space. “You can grow so many potatoes in such a small amount of space, but here’s the trick. Add a small layer of garden soil or compost at the very base, and then plant your potatoes.”

Sweet potatoes, often mentioned alongside potatoes, are a different species. They need some protection from frost in early spring or late autumn. You can grow sweet potatoes directly in the ground or in containers, so they are ideal for small spaces.
